Immediate Help After a Veteran Suicide: Critical First Steps for Families

The devastating loss of a veteran to suicide leaves families facing overwhelming grief alongside urgent practical concerns. Once A Soldier provides immediate financial support and guidance during this critical time, helping you navigate the necessary steps with compassion and expertise.

The Most Important First Step Most Families Miss

Store the Veteran at the Coroner/Medical Examiner’s Office First – Not a Funeral Home

In the shock following a veteran suicide, many families instinctively call, or are told to call, a funeral home. This common mistake can lead to unnecessary expenses and rushed decisions during an already traumatic time. Once the funeral home accepts the remains, the meter starts ticking. They are there to make money. They will not make payment plans. They will need full payment before you can see the body sometimes.

  • You typically have 60 days to make funeral arrangements
  • Keeping your loved one at the coroner’s office during this period:
    • Gives you time to process your loss
    • Allows you to explore financial assistance options
    • Prevents premature funeral home storage fees
    • Provides space to make informed decisions

Get Help Now

If you’re dealing with the aftermath of a veteran suicide, contact Once A Soldier immediately – ideally before making any arrangements. Our experienced team provides immediate financial assistance and guidance through this difficult process.

Important: We are not a crisis hotline. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, please call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for immediate help.

Funeral Costs Aid

We gift up to $1,000 to pay down the costs of a funeral. We favor modest services such as a cremation versus a full-blown funeral home ceremony, but will grant to all that we can.

Mental Health Training

A scientifically-proven meditation method we favor can be taught to any survivor for free. We took the training and love having this life-long skill for stress relief.

Bio Hazard Fees

Believe it or not, some families are forced by finances to clean up the remains of their loved one themselves. We will grant aid to pay for professional clean-up service providers.
