VA mortgage relief changes are putting thousands of veterans at risk

Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program is over.

A recent report from International Business Times highlights a growing issue affecting veterans across the country: rising foreclosures tied to changes in a key VA mortgage assistance program.

In May 2025, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ended the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program. This program had allowed the VA to purchase distressed loans and refinance them at significantly lower interest rates, giving struggling veteran homeowners a path to stay in their homes.

According to reporting from NPR and regional affiliates, the impact has been significant:

  • More than 10,000 veterans have already lost their homes to foreclosure
  • Roughly 90,000 additional VA borrowers are currently behind on payments or at risk
  • VA loan foreclosures are now at their highest level in over a decade

It’s important to clarify what this change does and does not mean. The core VA home loan benefit has not been eliminated. Veterans can still obtain VA-backed mortgages. However, the removal of VASP created a gap in foreclosure prevention at a time when many borrowers were still recovering from pandemic-era financial strain and rising interest rates.

While policymakers have discussed replacement programs, implementation has lagged. That delay is where the real-world consequences are being felt.

For organizations that support veteran families, this moment underscores a broader truth: the need doesn’t end when service members return home. Financial instability, housing insecurity, and mental health challenges often intersect, especially during periods of economic pressure.

As foreclosure risk rises, so does the importance of local support systems, nonprofits, and community awareness. For many families, early intervention and accessible resources can make the difference between recovery and crisis.
